Carefully remove stains from a teak table

Verwijder voorzichtig vlekken van een teakhouten tafel

Marijn Souren |

A moment of inattention is enough to knock over a full glass with your hand or elbow, and the contents spill onto the table the next. This is annoying, but not particularly dramatic if it's a solid teak table . There are several methods for removing stains from a teak table. The cleaning methods used depend on the wood's surface treatment, the type of treatment, and the specific substance that caused the stains. We've compiled a list of the most successful cleaning methods.

Removing stains from an untreated teak table

If you spill coffee, fruit juice, or wine on an untreated teak table, you need to act quickly. A damp cloth or sponge is often sufficient to prevent stains. A little mild soap may be necessary, but dilute it with water before use. For stubborn stains caused by liquids that have been sitting on the table for a long time, you can use fine sandpaper to roughen the affected area. The natural oil of teak usually prevents liquids from penetrating deeply into the wood's surface. Surface dirt can be easily removed this way. The treated area is often slightly lighter than the surrounding area. This will fade over time.

Special features of treated teak wood

Teak treated with a special oil or varnish is generally well protected against stains. However, under unfavorable conditions, dark edges or dirt can develop, for example, when children mishandle a felt-tip pen or leave a glass with a wet bottom on the tabletop for an extended period. Using damp cloths is unlikely to be effective on oiled teak tables. Stains cannot be removed without roughening the wood surface with fine or slightly coarser sandpaper. After removing the stain, treat the affected area again with oil. After several applications of the solution, the lighter color disappears, and the color difference is barely visible. This is more difficult with a varnished solid teak table. In this model, the wood surface must be completely sanded before it can be fully re-varnished.

Removing green deposits from teak garden furniture

Periods of damp weather and prolonged rainfall are not uncommon in our latitudes. After such periods of bad weather, a greasy, green layer of algae and moss often forms on teak garden furniture. This is easily removed with a mixture of warm water and mild soap, to which approximately 4-6 tablespoons of baking soda have been added. Wash the garden furniture with this solution and let it soak for 10 minutes. Then wipe the wooden surface with a damp sponge and rinse with clean water.

Stains on teak garden tables caused by spilled drinks, food remains or external weather influences should be treated with the same method as described in the first section: If warm water and mild soap are not sufficient, use sandpaper for the final treatment and, if necessary, special oil.
