Why clean your teak garden table?
A frequently asked question is how a teak garden table needs to be maintained. We at Souren Furniture advise you to clean your table at least once a year, but preferably twice a year, with mild soap. This ensures that the table continues to look beautiful and is also better for the teak. Over time, your garden table may develop a green and sometimes - if there is a motorway next door, for example - a black deposit on the furniture. This is easy to remove.
Cleaning a teak garden table? Brief information
As soon as the first rays of sunshine come through, the itch to get the garden in order starts again. Removing weeds and cleaning the tiles are part of it, but don't forget your teak garden table!
The supplies
- Bucket, watering can or preferably a garden hose
- lukewarm water
- Green soap and soda
- Hard brush
Follow these steps and your garden table will look radiant again!
(Estimated working time 15-25 minutes, depending on size)
- Wet the table thoroughly. This allows the teak to absorb the combination of green soap and soda, making it easier to scrub off the dirty parts.
- Mix a bucket or watering can with warm water and add some green soap and 6 tablespoons of soda.
- Soak the table well with the mixture and scrub vigorously with the brush. Just like with sanding, always in the lengthwise direction of the wood grain! The brush will occasionally clog with the dirty particles, rinse these regularly.
- After scrubbing, the table can best be sprayed clean with a garden hose. If there happens to be a rain shower coming, you can also wait for this, which saves a lot of water. If necessary, you can also rinse with a bucket or watering can.
- To make the table look completely fresh again, lightly sand it with very fine sandpaper, this makes the table shine again! This can only be done once the table is completely dry again!!
- Don't forget to reward yourself, take a seat at your radiant table with a nice snack and drink!
Extend lifespan, no furniture cover and be careful with storage
Teak wood naturally gets a beautiful grey patina over time. If you really want to prevent this, the garden table should be cleaned every year and then oiled again. Personally, we think the grey colour suits the furniture and the wood better. Incidentally, the oil does not make the garden table last longer. That is why we advise to clean the table twice a year with only green soap and soda.
Another important part, storage or covering. Definitely do not cover. If there is not enough air, the wood can 'suffocate', causing mold and black spots that are almost impossible to remove, these penetrate very deeply into the wood. That is why we do not sell a furniture cover. Storage is possible, preferably free under a canopy or in an unheated space. Definitely do not put the wooden garden table in a very dry space where there is also a fire. The difference from wet autumn or winter weather to a dry and warm space can cause the wood to crack due to the too fast drying.
