Close-up van schimmel op teakhouten tuinbank vóór de reiniging

Marijn Souren |

Teak garden furniture is strong and durable, but mould can develop in damp or shady weather. With a simple method your furniture will quickly look fresh and clean again, and you can prevent new growth. Looking to expand or replace your set afterwards? Step 1: Thorough cleaning for mould

What you need

  • Bucket with warm water
  • 1 cup (240 ml) white vinegar
  • 1 cup (200 g) oxygen bleach powder (e.g. OxiClean, Vanish Oxi Action)
  • A few drops of mild dish soap
  • Soft brush or sponge
  • Garden hose (no pressure washer)

Method

  1. Mix vinegar and warm water in a bucket.
  2. Fully dissolve the oxygen bleach powder.
  3. Add a few drops of dish soap and stir gently.
  4. Wet the furniture and brush the mixture in with the grain.
  5. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, keeping the wood damp.
  6. Lightly scrub and rinse thoroughly with the garden hose.
  7. Let it dry completely in a well-ventilated place, preferably out of direct sun.

Extra tips against mould on teak

  • Place furniture in a sunny, airy spot if possible.
  • Do not use a plastic tarp. Choose a breathable cover so air can circulate.
  • Rinse off dust and pollen regularly and deep clean twice a year.
  • Lightly sand once a year for a fresh look.
  • Want to slow down greying? Use a suitable teak protector.

Our experience

We applied this method to our own teak garden furniture at Casa Lana in Portugal. The furniture looked fresh and clean again and the approach is easy to apply.
