In Saanen in Switzerland, at just over a thousand metres in the Bernese Oberland and a stone's throw from Gstaad, JUMPlan has fitted out a new chalet room. The company designs and builds ski jumps and nordic sports centres, in Switzerland and abroad. The room is built entirely from reclaimed wood: a beamed ceiling, wall panelling of weathered boards, linen blinds and a long bar frame the dining area.
We supplied eleven teak tables of 140 x 90 cm and one long teak table of 350 x 100 cm, both in reclaimed teak. Around them stand forty-six of our Berlin teak chairs with cross, a model we supply to the hospitality trade time and again. Together that makes more than forty seats, spread over separate tables along the windows and one long table that forms the centrepiece beside the bar.
A mountain valley asks a lot of furniture. In winter the heating dries out the indoor air, and in summer the damp returns through open doors and wet coats. Reclaimed teak from Java has weathered those swings for decades before it becomes a tabletop. Its high oil content means the wood barely moves, so gaps and cracks stay away. Signs of use belong to the material: a scratch or a dent disappears into the existing texture rather than standing out. Outdoors on a terrace, teak takes on its familiar silver-grey patina after a season; indoors it keeps its warm honey colour.
